Google's AI Headlines: A Recipe for Misinformation? (2025)

Google's latest experiment with AI-generated headlines in Google Discover is raising eyebrows, and for good reason: the results are, frankly, not good. It seems that artificial intelligence is making its presence felt across Google's services, whether we asked for it or not. The latest example? AI-generated headlines in Google Discover, the platform that curates news and information based on your interests. The Verge recently reported that some articles are now appearing with AI-generated headlines, distinct from the originals. And, predictably, some of these AI-crafted headlines are misleading or just plain inaccurate.

For instance, one headline, generated by AI, declared, "Steam Machine price revealed." However, the actual article from Ars Technica was titled, "Valve's Steam Machine looks like a console, but don’t expect it to be priced like one." The article itself didn't reveal any pricing information. In a similar vein, Engadget staff also found that Discover was providing original headlines alongside AI-generated summaries. Both instances are clearly labeled as "Generated with AI, which can make mistakes."

But here's where it gets controversial... Google's spokesperson, Mallory Deleon, stated that this is a "small UI experiment for a subset of Discover users." The aim is to make topic details easier to digest before exploring links.

This seemingly innocent update could have larger implications. Google has a history of tense relationships with online media, often acting as an intermediary between publishers and readers. Publishers have repeatedly sought compensation from Google for displaying portions of their content. In response, Google has, in some cases, removed those sources from search results, even claiming that showing news doesn't significantly boost its ad revenue.

And this is the part most people miss... For those who are fans of AI integration, Google is also increasing AI's presence in its search experience. AI Mode, which has already been criticized as "theft" by the News Media Alliance, is becoming even more integrated into the mobile search platform.

What do you think about Google's increasing use of AI in its services? Do you think the benefits outweigh the risks, or are you concerned about the potential for misinformation and the impact on online media? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
