A shocking discovery in Kotido District has led to the arrest of a man suspected of illegal gun possession, sparking a wave of questions about security and community involvement. The incident, which unfolded in Maaru Sub-county, highlights the ongoing efforts to combat illicit firearms in the region.
Reports from concerned local residents triggered the investigation. They alerted authorities to the possibility of an illegal weapon hidden within a family's possession. This crucial information set the stage for a joint operation.
Security forces, including the police, the UPDF (Uganda People's Defence Force), and district leaders, swiftly mobilized. Their target: Nakongchua Village, where the suspect, Nayiang Alemukori Dokito, resided.
According to Police, the operation was intelligence-led, based on the tip-off. IP Mike Longole, the Karamoja Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that the initial search, however, didn't yield the firearm.
But here's where it gets controversial... In a move to pressure the suspects, authorities, led by the Kotido RDC (Resident District Commissioner), impounded 40 cows from the village. This action, intended to encourage the surrender of the weapon, eventually proved successful.
"The pressure mounted, and the illegal gun was eventually surrendered," Longole stated. Nayiang Alemukori Dokito was subsequently arrested and taken into police custody, paving the way for further investigations.
Fortunately, the impounded cattle were later returned to their rightful owners, demonstrating a commitment to fairness amidst the operation.
Police investigations are now focused on determining the origin of the weapon and identifying any potential accomplices.
